Search the Hamilton County Inmate Roster

The Hamilton County inmate roster is a free, public tool for finding people held in the county jail. A Hamilton County inmate search returns current bookings, with photos, charges, bonds, and scheduled court dates. The Sheriff's Office runs the jail on Cumberland Road in Noblesville and posts the roster online without a login. Inmate records here cover who is in custody right now, not a full criminal history. The data updates often but is not warranted for accuracy, so the jail phone remains the way to confirm anything that matters. Knowing the search fields and what a profile shows makes any inmate records lookup quick.

Hamilton County Jail Roster Overview

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, led by Sheriff Dennis Quakenbush, runs the County Jail and posts a live roster of current inmates. The official lookup page embeds the search application and carries a clear disclaimer: the data comes from public records that change constantly, is not warranted for accuracy, and may not reflect the most current status. The page also warns that the county does not take cryptocurrency for bond and that crypto bond requests are a common scam.

The roster is unusually detailed for a county jail. Each current inmate has a profile with a mugshot, demographics, booking history, bonds, court dates, charges, and docket numbers. That lets you move from a jail profile straight to the court case by copying the docket number into MyCase.

The county current-inmates page, shown below, embeds the lookup and posts the roster disclaimer.

  1. Open the Hamilton County current inmate search application.
  2. Enter a name, or a subject or booking number if you have one.
  3. Leave "In Custody" checked to see current inmates only.
  4. Open a matching result to view the full profile.
  5. Copy the docket number and look up the case in MyCase.

The direct search application, shown below, offers name, subject number, booking number, custody status, date range, and housing facility fields.

What an Inmate Profile Shows

Open a result and the profile is rich. It groups data into demographics, photos, booking history, bonds, court info, and charges. The public profile does not show a Social Security number, a full birth date, medical flags, the housing pod, an attorney, or victim details. The inventory below lists the fields you will see.

Booking Process in Hamilton County

Booking is the intake step after an arrest. The Sheriff's Office, a city police department, or the state police brings a person to the jail or holds them for transfer. Intake records identity, a booking number, a subject number, a photo, demographics, and the charges. A housing facility and a prisoner type, such as Pretrial or Safekeeper, are assigned.

Bond is set by the county schedule or by a judge. Charges and court dates then appear on the public profile when available. Some domestic and violent offenses carry a 24-hour hold before a person can post bond. The Sheriff's home page, shown below, lists the jail and resource links.

From booking forward, the roster tracks custody until release or transfer. Sheriff's transport handles court appearances and medical trips, and it picks up defendants statewide, or out of state within set limits, on Hamilton County warrants. Booking origin on a profile often shows the jail itself or a local police department, which tells you which agency made the arrest.

Visitation Hours and Rules

Hamilton County jail visits are video-based through ViaPath. Visits are by appointment, run 30 minutes, and may be scheduled up to a week ahead. The county recommends booking 24 hours in advance, and scheduling happens by website or kiosk, not by phone, unless pre-approved. The schedule below reflects the county's posted windows.

Visit TypeScheduleLength
General population video visits7-11 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m.30 minutes
Contact-block visiting hoursMon-Fri 8:30-10 a.m., 1:30-4:30 p.m., 7:30-10 p.m.30 minutes
Attorney / approved professionalsBy appointment30 minutes unless approved otherwise

Adults must each schedule their own visit. A maximum of two children may visit with a registered adult, and minors need a parent or guardian and an ID card. The county can deny any visit and can suspend an account for misuse. Confirm current windows in the ViaPath scheduler or by calling jail visitation at 317-776-9800.

How to Contact an Inmate

Three channels reach an inmate: a scheduled video visit, a collect phone call the inmate starts, or U.S. mail. Staff generally cannot pass messages except true emergencies, which go through the Chaplain. Personal mail is delivered digitally through ViaPath Mail Scanning, so letters are scanned rather than handed over on paper.

Use this mail format and include the sender's full name and physical address:

  • Hamilton County Jail, IN
  • Inmate name and #identifier
  • P.O. Box 247
  • Phoenix, MD 21131

Legal mail is handled separately and is not part of the scanning rule. Pornographic photos and Polaroids are not allowed, and newspapers or magazines must come straight from the publisher.

Commissary and Inmate Funds

You can put money on an inmate account online or at a kiosk in the jail lobby with cash or a credit card. You need the inmate's prisoner identification number. The county no longer takes money at the lobby window, and cash or money orders cannot be mailed.

Inmates order commissary on Sundays and receive orders on Saturdays. Money taken during book-in is credited to the commissary account. The jail also charges medical co-pays of $15 for a doctor or nurse visit, a dentist visit, a monthly refill, or a new prescription. The inmate information page, shown below, covers deposits, medical fees, phone calls, and mail.

Inmates serving less than 31 days must supply their own medications.

How to Read Charges and Docket Numbers

The charges section is where the jail record meets the court record. Each charge row lists a description, an offense date, a docket number, a disposition, a sentence length, a crime class, and the arresting agency. The crime class tells you how serious the charge is, from a Class C misdemeanor up through Level 1 and 2 felonies. The disposition tells you the outcome if one has been entered.

The docket number is the bridge. Copy it into MyCase to open the full court case behind the booking. A number like 29D06-2604-F6-003797 codes the county, the court, the year and month, the case type, and the sequence. Once you have the case, you can read the Chronological Case Summary, see the next hearing, and request certified copies from the Clerk. Remember that a charge is an accusation, not a conviction, so read the disposition before drawing any conclusion about guilt.

Release Dates and Custody Status

The roster shows custody status, but it is a snapshot, not a guarantee. Search results include a scheduled release date, and each profile has a release date field that fills in when a person is released and the record is kept. Scheduled release is not the same as actual release, and a person can drop off the current list because of release, transfer, a data refresh, or a record restriction.

So do not treat an empty result as proof. If custody status matters for a legal, travel, or safety decision, call the jail at 317-776-9800 to confirm. For someone moved to state prison, the Indiana Department of Correction search applies, and for federal custody, the Bureau of Prisons locator does. The released inmates page walks through each of those tools and how to set up release notifications.
